Justin Bieber has issued a furious denial on Twitter after being accused of sexually assaulting a fan in a Texas hotel room six years ago.
The 26-year-old singer insists the alleged incident is “factually impossible”, posting a string of messages about his whereabouts that night, as well as photos and receipts to back his words.
The claim was made in an online post under the name Danielle, who suggested she and friends had gone to Bieber’s room at the Four Seasons in Austin, Texas, on March 9, 2014.
She said they had kissed consensually in bed but she objected to “going too far” with him, writing: “My body felt unconscious – I don’t want to go into detail about what happened next.”
The woman said she was 21 – a year older than the star – claiming she was “sexually assaulted without consent” and had decided to speak up now after discussing the alleged incident with friends and close family.
However Bieber said he had not stayed at the Four Seasons, producing receipts to prove he was at an AirBnb with then-girlfriend Selena Gomez on the night of the alleged assault before moving to a Westin hotel.
“I don’t normally address things as I have dealt with random accusations my entire career but after talking with my wife and team I have decided to speak up on an issue tonight,” the star wrote.
“Rumors are rumors but sexual abuse is something I don’t take lightly. I wanted to speak out right away but out of respect to so many victims who deal with these issues daily I wanted to make sure I gathered the facts before I made any statement.
“In the past 24 hours a new Twitter appeared that told a story of myself involved with sexual abuse on March 9, 2014 in Austin Texas at the Four Seasons hotel. I want to be clear. There is no truth to this story.
“In fact as I will soon show I was never present at that location.”
Bieber had appeared at the South By Southwest music festival as a surprise guest on March 9, 2014, saying his assistant was at the side of the stage and Ms Gomez was also watching on.
He posted a picture of himself and Ms Gomez from the festival, receipts for their accommodation – revealing he used the alias ‘Mike Lowery’ – and news articles on his whereabouts.
Bieber, who married his model wife Hailey Rhode Bieber in 2018, also pointed readers to a tweet about him at the restaurant at the Four Seasons, but from the day after the alleged sexual assault.
The star finished his string of messages by saying: “Every claim of sexual abuse should be taken very seriously and this is why my response was needed.
“However this story is factually impossible and that is why I will be working with twitter and authorities to take legal action.”
Bieber had a highly publicised on-off relationship with actress Ms Gomez for four years before they officially split for good in October 2014.
The Twitter account which posted the original allegation was not active this morning.
