Newport News considering virtual, hybrid options for school; final decision Aug. 4

Students could return to school either virtually or two days a week under a proposal presented Monday evening to the Newport News School Board.

The board will decide Aug. 4.

They are not considering bringing students back full-time.

“We were well aware that we would not be able to accommodate 100% of our students reporting to our school buildings every day and continue to meet the safety guidelines necessary to keep staff and students,” Superintendent George Parker said.

Parker presented three options to the school board in the virtual meeting in a presentation that was still being tinkered with until shortly before the meeting started. The district is launching a student, family and staff survey Tuesday to collect more feedback.

The first is an all-virtual start for the first nine weeks of the semester, through Nov. 2. Families of special education students and those learning English might choose to participate

Virus worries and FOMO drive options bets on surging tech giants

By April Joyner

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Options investors are ramping up bets on some of this year’s biggest winners, including Amazon.com Inc, Netflix Inc and Tesla Inc, even as they turn cautious on the wider market amid a resurgent U.S. coronavirus outbreak.

Investors are betting that tech-related stocks will remain comparatively resilient to the coronavirus-fueled economic disruptions that have battered sectors such as retail and travel, despite growing concerns about stretched valuations following steep rallies.

Analysts also see another factor driving the momentum stocks: fear of missing out, or FOMO.

The rocket-like rise of such stocks has driven year-to-date gains for the S&P 500 technology, consumer discretionary and communication services sectors, though the broader S&P 500 benchmark index remains negative for the year. Amazon is a component of the consumer discretionary index, and Netflix is a component of the communication services index.

“The flight to safety is in tech,”

High Schools not playing yet? Kids still finding options to get on the field

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, like many school systems throughout North Carolina, have not yet begun summer workouts for high school sports.

With school activities on pause, some area student-athletes are still finding ways to get into the game this summer, in part to fight boredom, stay sharp and to find new ways to get recruited for college.

For the past several weeks, for example, some of the area’s best high school basketball and football stars have participated in 7-on-7 football and travel basketball events in South Carolina. There’s also been live baseball and track events in the area. Sunday, VTO Sports is expecting more than 150 football players for its Elite 100 Showcase Camp at the Matthews SportsPlex.

For 17-year-old Olympic High football player D.J. Bradford, there’s no question about participating, even during a pandemic.

“My whole household has been worried about the COVID thing,” Bradford said, “but I’ve got to take

Testing Options Expand in Austin-Travis County

AUSTIN, TX — Health officials have established a nursing hotline to help with testing enrollment for residents wanting to be screened for the coronavirus, it was announced Tuesday.

The hotline was established as an alternative to those without Internet service who are in need of testing enrollment, Austin Public Health officials explained. Moreover, health officials said they are making testing more accessible by rolling out mobile testing in neighborhoods where residents may have difficulty visiting a drive-thru testing location or CommunityCare clinic.

Residents with COVID-19 symptoms or who are COVID-19 positive and do not have a place to safely isolate may utilize a free City of Austin Isolation Facility, officials added.
